The Man Mo Temple

The Man Mo temple in Hong Kong is both the most celebrated and oldest temple in Hong Kong. The Man Mo temple is devoted to two Gods, one military and one noncombative man. The Man Mo Temple was built to celebrate both the God of Literature and the God of War (The God of literature (Man otherwise known as Man Cheong), and the God of War (Mo)). Statues of both Gods are situated on the alter (Man holds a writing utencil while Mo holds a sword).

Man, which translates to covo; was a Chinese statesman of the third century while mo which translates to military was a Chinese soldier from the second century. Man is traditionaly the guardian or civilians while Mo the protector of the army is a focus for adoratoin by both Buddhists and Taoists alike.

A visit to Man Mo Temple is an absulute if you want to sample the aroma of a Taoist temple when visiting Hong Kong. Keep a close eye out for the two bells in the temple. Also remember this is a place of worship and not just a tourist attraction. The atmosphere is strangely enigmatic and relaxed. The atmosphere is heavy with the odor of inscense which burn from coils which hang from the cieling.. Whenever an offering or prayer is made a bell and drum which are situated beside the enterance are sounded.
